In my former life I was an actuary with three decades of global management experience, every year serving as fertile writing fodder. My first two books—Deadly Investment and Deadly Day Trading—sit in a crime fiction series. Both a mystery novelist and an energy technology history writer, my current project is a global history of nuclear power reactors. I also offer a few newsletters— a review newsletter covering books and movies/series, a curation of reading and viewing choices, my authorly journal centered on daily work and life in the Anthropocene, and, of course, the newsletter on this website’s subject matter—which you can track down on my website.
Writing provides much of the meaning in my life but I chase a number of dreams. I am an ardent reader in a wide variety of book genres. I thrill to modern film. My wife and I hike often, our adventures ranging from day walks, through pub-to-pub multiday rambles, to camping and hefting backpacks into remote territory. We’re ardent birdwatchers; like Jonathan Franzen, I use birding as my conduit to nature. Grandparenting nine livewires aged eight and under is a constant joy. An activist in several periods of my life, I’ve been an Extinction Rebellion arrestee in support of my current preoccupation: the climate crisis. Philosophically, I am a rational humanist. I jog.
