I’m not sure what kinds of airplanes flew from Washington, D.C. to Florida in 1957 but I’m pretty sure they wouldn’t have been quiet and comfortable. I enjoyed noticing how hard one of the reactor developers, Walter Zinn, worked and traveled after he left government employment to run his own company in Dunedin, Florida. Here he is, writing to his friend James Ramey who worked at the heart of the political system:
Dear Jim,
Zinn, Walter H. 1957. Norris to Ramey, Feb. 15, 1957. “Zinn, Walter H., 1956-73,” Box 720, Series I, RG 128. NARA II, College Park, Maryland.
I have talked to Roy Snapp and he has indicated that you might want to arrange a meeting between myself and some of your group for the evening of Tuesday, February 26th. I have an appointment to accompany some folks from Florida on a visit to the Commission the morning of the 26th. Unless I hear to the contrary from you, I will reserve the evening from five o’clock on for a possible get-together with you.
Unfortunately I have something to do down here the next morning and therefore I must leave in time to catch an 11:00 p.m. plane. I say unfortunately because I would really prefer to go to a hotel and sleep, but as long as whatever you might arrange lets me get to the plane, that would be all right.
